  Stroke Stroke is a serious brain condition in which the blood vessels present in brain ruptures or bleeds or when there is a blockage in the blood supply of the brain. This rupture or blockage causes sudden death of brain cells or neurones. A stroke can cause permanent brain damage, long-term disability or even death. It is categorised in mental illness. Every year, more than 795,000 people in the United States have a stroke. About 610,000 of these are first or new strokes. About 185,000 strokes—nearly 1 in 4—are in people who have had a previous stroke.
