Thyroid gland is a butterfly shaped gland located at the front of the neck below the Adams Apple which helps you in making of Triodothyronine hormone, Thyroxine hormone and Calcitonin hormone. It is an endocrine gland in vertebrates. The thyroid has two side lobes connected by a bridge (isthmus) in the middle. Your thyroid gland is brownish-red in colour and the gland is rich in blood vessels.
The hormones secreted by thyroid gland is important for growth and development of your body. In fact, thyroid hormone also place very crucial role in brain development.
Thyroid Disease
The thyroid gland produces various hormones which place very crucial role in growth and development. When there is inbalance in secretion of hormones by thyroid gland and it's start producing either too much or too less of these hormones then, this condition is known as Thyroid disease.
There are many two types of thyroid disease one is Hyperthyroidism and another is Hypothyroidism
When thyroid gland makes too much hormone and the body uses too much energy very quickly then, the condition named as a Hyperthyroidism.
If your gland makes to less of thyroid hormone then, you have the condition of Hypothyroidism. The less secretion of thyroid hormone makes you feel tired and you might gain too much weight.
Thyroid Problems includes:
1) Thyroid Cancer
2) Goiter- Enlargement of thyroid gland.
3) Hyperthyroidism- When body produces too much thyroid hormone.
4) Hypothyroidism- When your body produces to less thyroid hormone.
5) Thyroid nodules- lumps in the thyroid gland.
6) Thyroiditis- Swelling of the thyroids.
Causes of Thyroid Disease:
A) Deficiency of Iodine in the body.
B) Taking too much medicines can also leads to imbalance in secretion of hormones.
C) Thyroid surgery can also leads to thyroid disease, in some cases.
D) Radiation Therapy: The Radiation Therapy used in the treatment of cancer can affect the working of thyroid gland and leads to thyroid disease.
E) Genetic Cause: If any one of the parent is suffer from Thyroid disease than, their is high possibility that their child will also suffer from this condition.
F) Malfunctioning in pituitary gland, mainly termed as pituitary disorder can also leads to thyroid disease.
Symptoms of Thyroid Disease:
• Having feeling of restlessness and nervousness.
• Shaking of the body and feeling of anxiety.
• Weakness of muscles and thin skin.
• Memory problems and dry skin and hair.
• Heavy and irregular menstruation in females.
• Fertility problem in both males and females.
Complications of Thyroid Disease:
1) Development of goiter.
2) Infertility
3) Myxedema Coma
4) Memory Loss
5) Heart Problems
Points to remember for maintaining healthy Thyroid Gland:
A) Less or no intake of low sugar diet and 'ultra processed' food: Foods like frozen meals, junk foods, soft drinks and some packaged foods like cookies, cakes etc. should be avoided because, these foods contain a high sugar and fats that can cause imbalance in working of your thyroid gland.
B) Reduce your stress level: Researches shows that, if your stress level is high then, it can cause thyroid hormone resistance.
C) Regular workout: Daily exercise or performing yoga asanas can help in reducing the risk of your thyroid disease.
D) Get enough iron in your diet: Foods such as grains, serials and sprouts are rich in iron which helps your body to make enough thyroid hormone.
E) Maintain healthy body weight: By maintaining healthy body weight, the risk of having thyroid disease is very less.
